The problem for most small businesses can be summarised as follows:

"We don't know what we don't know."

That's one of the biggest problems for anyone who runs a small business. In fact, according to the Institute for Independent Business, the 10 greatest worries of the owners and MD's of small businesses are:

  1. Sales
  2. Cash flow and funding
  3. Profitability
  4. Marketing
  5. Legislation
  6. Loneliness
  7. Lack of time
  8. Lack of personal exit strategy
  9. Loss of original vision
  10. Lack of up-to-date information

Business Support Program

However confident you are as an owner / MD, there are always times when you wish that you had another mature and experienced business person to provide that vital second opinion, or to bounce ideas off. MD's of large companies can call on a board of directors, but MD's of small companies do not have this luxury.

Under the IIB Business Support Program, an Accredited Executive Associate of the IIB acts as the program co-ordinator / mentor for the company. This Advisor:

  • is available on a 'hot line' number at all reasonable times to talk through issues on the MD's mind.
  • will find the answer to any business query the MD may have, by drawing on the vast resources of the Institute.
  • will sit in on the company's regular strategy and planning meetings to ensure that the company is progressing to plan.
  • will plan and co-ordinate with the MD whatever practical assistance is needed by using expertise from the Institute for Independent Business.

Furthermore, as part of the program, the Executive will look at every one of over 55 areas of the company and identify cost savings and lost cash / opportunities often amounting to tens of thousands of pounds. Through this program, the MD gets a 'virtual' board of top hands-on professional directors to advise and assist.
